PIRELLI CALENDAR 2016: WOMEN WHO ARE IMPACTING THE WORLD THROUGH THE LENS OF ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

Forget all the beautiful models, half naked, most of the times, who have always featured on the most famous calendar- I am talking about the Pirelli one – and embrace the new more feminine and feminist mood.

This year, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Serena Williams, Fran Lebowitz, Amy Schumer, Tavi Gevinson, Ava DuVernay, Natalia Vodianova, Agnes Gund, Kathleen Kennedy, Mellody Hobson, Shirin Neshat and Yao Chen, to mention them all, have been portrayed by the magnificent Annie Leibovitz to show the maximum highness of iconic women in 2016. Iconic, yes, because of their spirit, strength and ideas and, most of all, because of the impact they have on this world, their way to make it a better place.

These women should be an inspiration for young girls who are approaching to what does it mean to be a meaningful piece on the huge puzzle that this planet is made of.

The Pirelli calendar is a proper revolution to collect and store as a combination of art, genius and beautiful minds.

A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.

Every day, you know, you learn something new about someone. I think that’s what life is about, it’s about learning something new every day. A partner for me that will be lifetime. She’s just a great individual and incredibly powerful woman.

Serena Williams

I started to think about the roles that women play, women who have achieved something. I wanted to make a classic set of portraits. I thought that the women should look strong but natural and I decided to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio. This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretense in these pictures and be very straightforward.
